The bearded dragon ( Pogona vitticeps ) belongs to the order of the squamates, including all lizards, snakes and amphisbenes (lizards with very short or even absent legs, visually approaching snakes) and is part of the agama family. The pogona is a diurnal (born) reptile. It can measure from 40 to 60 cm long (its tail being more than half of its size), for a weight ranging from 280 to 510 grams (the females being more often smaller and lighter than the males). They live between 6 and 10 years in captivity, but only between 3 and 8 years in the wild. Her natural color is brown / grayish all over her body with slightly lighter mottling. However, there are a multitude of mutant varieties that have been created in breeding, so we will find many different colors. Finally, the bearded dragon does not bear this name by chance. Indeed, this little lizard has a physical peculiarity of its own. The whole of its throat as well as the sides of its head have different scales from the others, since the pogona has the ability, by making its body swell especially when it feels threatened, to erect them to form a kind of "cushion thorns ". In addition, these thorns can turn black if the pogona so desires. It uses this transformation during dominance conflicts during mating periods. Caring for a bearded dragon in captivityAdopting a bearded dragon and keeping it in good condition requires some knowledge, but unlike many other reptile species, the pogona is an animal accessible even to beginners, just like leopard geckos. It is even more recommended to start with one of these two lizards when learning about terrariophilia. Feeding the bearded dragonThe bearded dragon does not eat the same way when it is juvenile or adult. It will therefore be necessary to respect this food cycle to provide it with all the nutrients it needs according to its age. When it is juvenile (until it measures approximately 25 cm), it should be given 5 to 8 crickets adapted to its size every two days, and up to a dozen. These insects are easily found in specialized stores for reptiles or in more and more pet stores. These insects will need to be sprinkled with calcium two to three times a week for the muscles and skeleton of the pogona to develop properly.Get this book now and discover more useful tips and guide on the Bearded Dragon Care. Scroll up and click BUY NOW.
